Does my child need orthodontic treatment?

Castaneda Orthodontics

Hello parents!

The first and most important thing to remember is that every child is different, which is why it’s essential to ensure your children visit the dentist regularly to check on their development and pick up any problems in the mouth early.

Many problems affect children’s oral health, including tooth decay, thumb sucking, tongue thrusting, lip sucking, and early tooth loss. Therefore, even though baby teeth are eventually replaced with permanent teeth, keeping baby teeth healthy is essential to a child’s overall health and well-being.

Generally speaking, orthodontic treatment starts between the ages of nine to 12 years old, although it’s not uncommon for treatment to start slightly earlier or later.

So what are some of the reasons your child may need braces?

There are many factors, including your child’s oral and physical development. Here are signs that orthodontics might be an effective treatment for your child or early intervention at seven.

Signs that your child may require orthodontic treatment include:

  • They lost baby teeth early
  • They have a misaligned jaw position
  • They have crowded (or crooked) teeth
  • They have spaces (or gaps)
  • They have prolonged thumb or dummy sucking
  • They’re mouth breathing
  • They have difficulty chewing
  • They have mouth or jaw pain
  • They have problems with speech
  • Abnormal eruptions

The best thing to do is bring them in for a checkup at age 7. You can also watch a few common issues that could develop as your child grows. Remember that some developing issues may only be apparent to a trained and experienced orthodontist.
